The 2014 Religious Education Conference was held at the Catholic Leadership Centre on 24–25 July, attracting over 300 delegates. International speakers included Professor Amy-Jill Levine (KU Leuven), John L Allen Jnr (Associate Editor of the Boston Globe – Senior Reporter for National Catholic Reporter) and Professor Annemie Dillen (KU Leuven).
The conference theme of
Church as Sacrament: You Too can Become All Flame
looked at ways in which Catholics go to the world with the gift of the Gospel and what it means to be ‘all flame’ in today’s world.
The topic provided a platform for energetic discussion, as speakers offered their interpretation of this theme to delegates along with in depth insights and expertise. Over the course of two days, delegates were able to participate in a choice of three out of thirty workshops.
These provided group discussion as well as an intimate opportunity for over 20 speakers to connect with their audiences. The Gospel story of the Walk to Emmaus by disciple Luke was a focal point for ‘Share an Hour With’ sessions. The conference Eucharist Mass was celebrated by His Grace, Archbishop Denis J Hart DD and concelebrated with Bishop Vincent Long and Bishop Greg Bennett at St John the Evangelist Church, East Melbourne followed by the conference dinner. Judging by the feedback, the Religious Education Conference was well received and hoped to kindle the flame of its audience for a long time to come.
