Education systems around the world are working in the context of 'accelerating and discontinuous change'. This means significant changes to the way of thinking, working and leading in our schools. The challenge is to find new ways of working which engage all stakeholders – students, parents and teachers – distribute leadership and build capacity and sustainability.
Change² is a consultative process for implementing sustainable change in schools and is being rolled out to Victorian Catholic schools in 2012–14 to support the introduction of the Integrated Catholic Online Network (ICON).

The achievement of these objectives will rely heavily on the capacity of our leaders at the local school level to plan strategically for the ICON implementation. ICON will link 13,000 teachers, 190,000 students and their parents in over 470 schools and Change² is the strategic initiative adopted by the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria Ltd (CECV) to support schools with this system-wide change.
A trial of the Change² process and tools in nine Catholic schools across Victoria ran from November 2011 through to March 2012. Its aim was to thoroughly test Change² and allow tailoring of the process, so that it meets the needs of the Catholic education sector in Victoria. In collaboration with Dame Professor Pat Collarbone, the Catholic Education Office Melbourne (CEOM) has strengthened the process and tools based on feedback from the trial schools. As a consequence the CEOM has ensured alignment with the objectives of the School Improvement Framework (SIF).
By the end of 2012, 70 facilitators across Victoria (with 62 from the Archdiocese of Melbourne) were trained in the use of the Change² process and tools, and 53 schools and the CEOM had also completed a Change² process. Facilitators assume the responsibility for assisting individual schools through the change program. Sixteen facilitators have advanced their skills to the level of Master Facilitators. These Master Facilitators, specifically trained by Dame Professor Pat Collarbone and Mr Simon Edkins, Directors of Creating Tomorrow Ltd, have developed the expertise to continuously train staff within Catholic education as facilitators. This will enable the CEOM to continuously build capacity for leadership and management of change using a systematic and scaffolded approach from within the system.

The CEOM Change² ICON Principals' Briefing was held on 17 August with 250 principals, school leaders and CEOM staff in attendance. The Executive Director welcomed the keynote speaker, Dame Collarbone, who addressed the audience along with Dr Mary Oski and Ms Debra Punton to provided general information relating to the Change² program and rollout to Victorian Catholic schools.

My role as principal at St Carlo Borromeo School is foremost as an educator, not a manager. That’s one of the reasons I opted to be the mathematics coordinator and to maintain that classroom and curriculum connection.
As a leader I need to be authentic, and a key personal challenge is to maintain current education practise. It’s important for teachers, students and parents to see me as a teacher and not only managing the administration side. A school should be about the education of its students and to engage them to maximise their learning.
St Carlo Borromeo organises parent forums once a month, so parents can discuss issues of importance over a cup of tea or coffee, including Prep transition and the effectiveness of online communication strategies between families and the school.
We have a high student wellbeing focus to engage the students in their learning and communications. Young people need to have a voice and to be proactive in their day-to-day learning.
One initiative along these lines is the ‘principal for a day’ concept. I swap roles with a student and sit in class for a day to see how engaged the children are and what questions they are asking. I basically have a day in the life of a student and a student can experience what my life is like as a principal.
With another initiative, we invite residents from nearby nursing homes to lunch. The parish organises the lunch and the children provide the entertainment. It’s a wonderful experience for all concerned, the young and the elderly. The plan is to have several of these functions every year.
