The Catholic Education Office Melbourne (CEOM) produces a range of communications to provide relevant, current and supportive information for the Catholic education community.
The CEOM provides a number of tools and services to facilitate communication across Catholic education. These include websites, online mail and news, a fortnightly e-newsletter from the Executive Director of Catholic Education to principals, and online data collection systems. These communication tools continued to provide a valuable service to schools in 2012 and improvements were made to some of these elements. Marketing and media services were also provided directly to schools.
Catholic Education Victoria Network (CEVN)
The Catholic Education Victoria Network (CEVN) website continued to be a vital intranet for communication across Catholic education. It provided a wide range of information, tools, policies and other resources for schools and provided school leaders with a central repository of forms and data collection required for government accountability purposes including Religious Education Accreditation, literacy assessment and compliance.
Catholic Online Mail for Schools (COMS)
Catholic Online Mail for Schools (COMS) delivered weekly information on operational matters to principals through an email service linked to the CEVN website.
Director’s eNews, an online newsletter for principals of Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne, was distributed fortnightly during school term. It provided a timely source of important information and opinion on educational matters; updates on major educational policy directions; summaries of recent media reports; and highlighted useful resources, events and professional learning activities. Director's eNews was also delivered by email to parish priests, leaders of religious congregations and CEOM staff.

My role as principal at St Carlo Borromeo School is foremost as an educator, not a manager. That’s one of the reasons I opted to be the mathematics coordinator and to maintain that classroom and curriculum connection.
As a leader I need to be authentic, and a key personal challenge is to maintain current education practise. It’s important for teachers, students and parents to see me as a teacher and not only managing the administration side. A school should be about the education of its students and to engage them to maximise their learning.
St Carlo Borromeo organises parent forums once a month, so parents can discuss issues of importance over a cup of tea or coffee, including Prep transition and the effectiveness of online communication strategies between families and the school.
We have a high student wellbeing focus to engage the students in their learning and communications. Young people need to have a voice and to be proactive in their day-to-day learning.
One initiative along these lines is the ‘principal for a day’ concept. I swap roles with a student and sit in class for a day to see how engaged the children are and what questions they are asking. I basically have a day in the life of a student and a student can experience what my life is like as a principal.
With another initiative, we invite residents from nearby nursing homes to lunch. The parish organises the lunch and the children provide the entertainment. It’s a wonderful experience for all concerned, the young and the elderly. The plan is to have several of these functions every year.
Principal and Parish Priest Briefings
Several briefings were conducted to inform principals about state and national education issues, as well as initiatives of the CEOM.

In 2012 the CEOM again produced a wide range of online and print publications including statistical bulletins; Catholic Education Week promotional material; reports and papers on Reading Recovery; funding fact sheets and resources for schools and parents; Director’s Letter to parents; the quarterly Catholic Education Today distributed to each family through their child’s school; catechists’ student and teacher booklets; conference programs and associated materials; annual reports; and a vast array of flyers, brochures, invitations and certificates.
Public Affairs and Government Policy
The CEOM continued to take a key leadership role on behalf of Catholic school communities in its liaison with the Australian and Victorian governments on the level of funding provided to Catholic schools. This had a particular focus in 2012 on responding to the release of the Australian Government’s Review of Funding for Schooling – the Gonski Review.
Much of the CEOM analysis of different elements and modelling of the Gonski Review informed Catholic education’s national response. This leadership role was also reflected in the Executive Director’s participation in negotiations on behalf of Catholic education with the Australian Government.
The CEOM kept Catholic school communities informed about the facts of school funding through various communications, including articles in Catholic Education Today. Much of these focused on My School data, which found that Catholic schools in Victoria operated on just 80 per cent of the government recurrent funding of government schools. In addition, when parent fees were included, Catholic schools had only 90 per cent of the funding per student in government schools.
This material was adopted by other dioceses and state Catholic education commissions to help inform parents in those areas.
Media and Marketing for Schools
The CEOM provided a range of services to schools in the areas of media and marketing. A summary of education-related media articles was emailed to schools daily. Support and advice was available for school leaders to assist them in responding to media enquiries and similarly to assist them in marketing in schools. Professional learning opportunities were also available.
