There is an increasing need to provide school services more efficiently and effectively. We need to continue developing strategic alliances and stronger partnerships with parents, parishes, local government, business and community services and explore options to co-locate schools with community health centres, kindergartens and activity centres.

Theme 3: Capability to Better Serve and Lead, Catholic Education Melbourne Strategic Plan 2015–2019

    Personal Story

    Overview

As a statewide project, the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria Ltd (CECV) Integrated Catholic Online Network (ICON) is underpinned by our commitment, as educators in Catholic schools and diocesan offices, to ensuring that every child and young person in Victorian Catholic schools has access to the same educational opportunities and resources.

The project will build capacity across all Victorian Catholic schools and diocesan offices to support and enable students, teachers, school leaders and parents to work together to improve student learning.

For the first time, every Catholic school in Victoria, regardless of size or resources, will have equal access to a package of learning, teaching, collaboration, administration, planning and reporting technologies.

    Implementation

The ICON Implementation Team held workshops across Victoria to provide all schools with an overview of what will be involved with the rollout of ICON. To coincide with these workshops a Google site (icon.cecv.catholic.edu.au) was developed and launched to support schools with the implementation of ICON.

A staged release strategy was developed with four releases planned. The first three releases will deliver the core ICON requirements with an increasing level of integration with third party applications for schools in Groups 1, 2 and 3. Release four will accommodate all schools, including those with more complex integration requirements.

    Portal

When a Victorian Catholic school rolls over to ICON, they will adopt one of three ICON Portal options:

    1. ICON Google portal
    2. a third party portal
    3. a school-built or custom portal.

Development of the ICON Google Portal started in 2015. To ensure that the portal meets schools’ needs, the ICON Portal Team ran an eight-week consultation process with the first three implementation groups to gather feedback from school users.

    eLearn

A Catholic Education Victoria instance of Google Apps for Education (GAFE) was created and the ICON GAFE team have set up 19,895 users across 71 domains.

GAFE eLearn Bootcamps were designed by the eLearn Team to support school leaders to migrate to the Catholic Education Victoria instance of GAFE. Eighteen Bootcamps were held in 2015 and were attended by more than 340 teachers and staff from 144 schools across Victoria.

    Feedback on the Bootcamps included:

A great overview of the basic functions, and very much appreciated the resources, particularly the links for further training that we can engage in independently, and recommend to other staff also. Loved that it was 'paperless'.

I am looking forward to getting the school on board with Google apps to enhance the learning and teaching of the staff and students.

    eAdmin

The ICON Unit worked with specialist suppliers Synergetic and Technology One to design, build and test eSIS, eHR and eFIN.

A group of school-based experts worked at Catholic Education Melbourne for two days a week to provide input and advice on school policies and processes during the design, build and testing of eSIS, eHR and eFIN. Their participation was critical in designing eAdmin.

    ePlan

Release 1 of ePlan will include a range of outputs associated with the following data sets:

    • NAPLAN data
    • teacher judgments against standards (e.g. A –E reporting)
    • ACER PAT data (*where schools use these tools)
    • attendance data
    • student, parent and staff profile data.

Five ePlan Subject Matter Experts joined the ICON Unit, completed over 50 school visits across Victoria, and worked with a number of stakeholder groups to gather information around the most commonly used data sets relevant to Victorian Catholic schools for future releases.
